The Saga of Fritjof the Bold

The Saga of Fritjof the Bold inspiredthe 19th century Swedish poet Esaias Tegner to write the poem “Fritjofs Saga”, based on the original material. The story of Fritjof the Bold is also one of few Mythsagas not covering several generations, or “jumping” between different people and generations. Dramaturgically it reminds more of medieval European folk tales than the Norse Sagas.

Fritjof is the son of Thorstein Vikingason (who has a tale of his own) in north of Norway and in love with a rulers daughter Ingeborg. But Ingeborg’s brothers do not think that a relatively simple man as Fritjof, is good enough for their sister. When the powerful King Ring from the south, attacks the brothers, Fritjof refuses assisting them with troups. He is sent to seek riches on the Orkney Islands. Meanwhile Ingeborg is forced to marry the much older King Ring. As Fritjof returns to Norway, his properties are burned and destroyed. He refuses to give up however and finally wins his lady and gets his revenge on her brothers.
